This past hour or so has been the quietest since arriving at ICU.......this is good but relative.....it has been all hands on deck twice with a very real chance , even likelyhood of Emily not surviving......even in ICU it’s unusual to have multiple surgeons in you room....fluid retention remains probably the most immediate issue...that was the reason for abdominal surgery....so much pressure that all her organs were at risk.....still a problem and an in room by pass machine is now being set up. Hopefully to stay ahead of the fluid now rather than an emergent situation later......Also she is starting kidney dialysis to remove toxins and reduce fluid........Still it is fairly quiet and the hallway which was full of devices now looks normal.......her caregivers are truly extraordinary.....the goal is to reduce fluids and hope here kidneys, liver and intestines can recover normal function....we’ve been with her quiet a bit but are out now while a sterile procedure is done.....more access for IV....there are 16 IV pumps bedside with multiple bags on some..plus the dialysis machine and bypass machine...lotta stuff......we talk to her a lot and will read some of the comments from the blog...she is not responsive but we feel sure she hears at some level...keith & peg

Keith, now we know why you have a soft spot for UW. Our prayers go out to you, Peg and Em as well as the great folks there taking care of her. Couldn't ask for a better care team or a stronger patient and parents. We may be hundreds of miles away but everyone is in that room with you. Lots of love. Randy, Pat, Jean

ReplyDeleteI’ve been thinking of our joint Thanksgiving twelve years ago, when we packed the house with family, friends, holiday orphans, and pets. It was chaotic and joyful and crowded and full of love. I hope you feel all that same concentrated love and energy that your community, and mine, are sending you in this moment of uncertainty. We are with you, Emily. Stay strong.
ReplyDeleteWe are praying for you all!
ReplyDeleteI hope your silence for a couple of hours, Keith and Peg, mean that you are getting some rest and some dinner. How I wish that I lived closer and could bring you a home-cooked meal and just sit with you. I've been thinking of and looking at photos of Emily on her European tour, her visit to Australia, and her passion for helping others. May that strength and resilience double within her right now, and help every part of her body be focused on healing. May God bless her with peace and confidence - and you both, as well - confidence that she will renew her strength and continue to teach us through her courage. Love you guys!
